I am a multi-media artist interested in exploring themes of cultural identity, displacement and erasure within the urban landscape. By way of combining painting, sculpture, and installation, my work breaks out of the traditional painting format, resulting in assemblages that propose painting as object. My practice is characterized by the integration of cultural nuances and histories from my environment in the Bronx. I utilize a variety of materials including found and discarded objects, concrete, and other “non-art” materials that are embedded with coded statements on contemporary social systems. My work with clothing and streetwear brands highlight these garments as symbols of identity and systemic scrutiny. The hooded sweatshirt becomes a representation of presence and absence – reckoning with the complexities of one’s desire to be seen, while acknowledging visibility as a vulnerable space for people of color to navigate.
